Hey everybody and welcome back to Raisa's Mythological Creature Blog! Today I'll be telling you about 10 Mythological Creatures from Hindi Mythology.
The first creature for today is Dhenuka. This creature was a demon that was killed by the god Krishna's brother Balarama. Dhenuka had assistant demons that were in the form of donkeys. I found out how he was killed from this myth: Balarama held Dhenuka's legs and threw him against a tree, causing his chest, neck and waist to shatter.
Sarama is a creature that is the queen of the gods. She is a female dog and there are many Hindu myths about her. One of them is that she helped the god Indra rescue some cows that were stolen by Hindu demons and she is often associated with Indra.
The next amazing animal is Suparna. It is a bird in Hindu Myths and is a symbol of the god Vishnu. A myth about the creature is that real life representations of Suparna include the brahminy kite and the phoenix. Another myth about Suparna is that it is sometimes known as Garuda.
Surabhi is the next very interesting creature. It is a cow, but the Hindi called it 'The mother of all cows'. I discovered two interesting myths about this beast. Firstly, she is a 'cow of plenty' and provides anything for her owner. Secondly, she is recognised as having a human's head and breasts and the body of a cow.
Ahi Budhnja is another mythological character. It is a demon serpent that is supposedly living in two rivers. There is a myth about this creature that I found out about: Ahi Budhnja kept the rivers in captivity, but Indra killed it.
Kurma is an avatar of Vishnu, and it is a tortoise. This is one of the many things that Vishnu can turn himself into. A myth about this form is that he and many other gods helped each other to churn the ocean of milk so that it produced amrita, the elixir of life.
Vishnu has 10 avatars altogether. Another one of them is Matsya, his fish avatar. Vishnu saved the world from a flood in this form. A myth about Matsya is that the first man, Manu, captured a fish and it revealed itself to be Vishnu in his fish form.
The next Vishnu avatar is Varaha, the boar. A myth about the boar form is that a demon called Hiranyaksha pulled the earth below the sea, Vishnu turned into a boar so he could save it. Many Hindu people believed that the god of preserving and Hiranyaksha fought for a thousand years and in the end, Vishnu triumphed over the demon and gained victory.
Vishnu's next avatar is Narasimha, the man lion. This avatar helped save the world yet again from demons. According to the myth, the king of the demons, Hiranyakashipu, took over and was unable to be defeated by any human or any animal. Because Narasimha is neither fully human nor fully lion, he could slay the demon and the world could be saved.
Lastly, the last Vishnu avatar, Vamana. This transforms Vishnu into a dwarf and helps him save us. A myth about Vamana is that he helped measure out how much space there is between the three worlds, heaven, earth and the space in the middle.
That's it for today! See you tomorrow for more amazing creatures! Bye!
